The images and comments below were prepared with the tourist in mind
and for a different web site. However the History group at the Benambra Neighbourhood House are happy for it to be used here with the links to their Historic Brochure at the end. |
Benambra and Omeo Valley
Benambra is about 22kms north of
Omeo and on the edge of Lake Omeo which may not have a lot, or in fact any, water in it. This is dependant on the season with drought being fairly common. During the good times speedboat racing has been the norm! Wet or dry it is an important landmark. This view is from Mt Sam (or Sam hill) near Omeo during a dry summer. |
|
From Omeo, heading for Benambra, you at first climb steeply, passing Mc Millans Lookout, then beginning the descent onto the plains. You pass through Hinnomunjie, once a thriving settlement which still hosts Bush Races during the Labour Day long weekend each March. From here its just a few minutes to Benambra. |

From Benambra you can continue towards
Corryong (about 130km) or take the Limestone Road toward McKillops Bridge and the Snowy River National Park. Or for an interesting loop, slip over The Benambra Connection track to Mt Blowhard into Omeo Valley and have a look at the historic Hinnomujie (Mitta actually) Bridge on the Mitta Mitta River. |
